To board the Shinkansen in Tokyo, you can catch it at either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station, as all trains stop at both locations. Personally, I prefer Tokyo Station as it’s the initial stop, making it easier to secure a seat. Conversely, when traveling from Kyoto and planning to transfer to the Narita Express, Shinagawa Station is a convenient option due to the short walking distance between the Shinkansen and Narita Express platforms. It’s worth noting that navigating between platforms at Tokyo Station can involve a lengthy walk. The same applies in the opposite direction if you want to switch between the Narita Express and the Shinkansen and continue directly to Osaka.
In Osaka, the Shinkansen operates from Shin-Osaka Station, which is located a few kilometers north of the downtown area. However, there’s no need to worry as Shin-Osaka is conveniently connected to downtown Osaka by the Midosuji subway line. This subway line stops at various downtown stations such as Umeda, Honmachi, Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Tennoji, making it easy to reach your desired destination within the city.
